Terms of service
Effective date: 30 April 2026
Introduction
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Goodmachine. They govern your use of whatisgm.com, our online store, articles, newsletters, digital PDF guides, free downloads, paid products, bundles, subscriptions, memberships, customer accounts, comments, reviews and related services (together, the "Service").
Goodmachine sells digital products to customers worldwide. These Terms apply to you wherever you live. Some countries and regions give you additional rights that cannot be taken away by contract — nothing in these Terms removes those rights. See Section 15 (Your consumer rights).
By using the Service, creating an account, downloading a guide or buying a product, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service or buy our products.
1. Who we are
Goodmachine is the trading name of XTRI Pty Ltd (ABN 73 694 733 956), 1 Denison Street, North Sydney NSW 2060, Australia. We operate our store and checkout using Shopify.
You can reach us at hello@whatisgm.com.
2. About Goodmachine
Goodmachine publishes news, essays, analysis, newsletters and digital guides. Our editorial work focuses on serious good news — stories of repair, progress and people moving from worse to better. Our guides are designed to help readers grow in practical areas of life, work, learning, relationships, technology, money, health and culture.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to buy products, create an account, subscribe to a paid product or enter into a transaction with us.
If you use the Service on behalf of a company, organisation, school or other entity, you confirm you have authority to bind that entity to these Terms.
4. Customer accounts
Some features may require a Shopify customer account or another connected account.
You agree to provide accurate information and keep your login details secure. You are responsible for all activity under your account. Tell us promptly at hello@whatisgm.com if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.
We may suspend, restrict or terminate accounts that breach these Terms, misuse the Service, infringe rights, engage in fraud, create a security risk, or harm Goodmachine or other readers.
5. Editorial content is not professional advice
Goodmachine content is provided for general information, education and editorial purposes only.
Unless we expressly say otherwise, our articles, newsletters and guides are not legal, financial, investment, medical, psychological, therapeutic, tax, safety, parenting or other professional advice.
You are responsible for your own decisions. Before relying on our content in a way that could affect your health, finances, legal position, family, business or safety, consider seeking advice from a qualified professional.
6. Digital guides and licences
When you buy or download a Goodmachine guide, you receive a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use that guide for your own personal or internal business use, unless the product page says otherwise. You buy a licence to use the guide — you do not buy ownership of it or its contents.
You must not:
- resell, share, upload, publish, distribute or give away our guides;
- copy substantial parts of a guide into another product, course, newsletter, website, file library, training material or dataset;
- remove copyright notices, licence notices, purchaser identifiers or watermarks;
- use guides to train, fine-tune, evaluate, populate or improve AI systems, models, datasets, retrieval systems or knowledge bases without our written permission;
- create derivative commercial products based on our guides;
- make guides available through public drives, forums, torrents, marketplaces, membership sites, or workplace or company-wide file libraries unless your licence permits it;
- bypass checkout, download controls, account controls, watermarks, file identifiers or other protection measures;
- claim our guides as your own work.
Some guides may include visible or invisible watermarks, purchaser identifiers, order identifiers, account identifiers, download records or other licence-management measures. These help protect our content and let us investigate misuse. They do not remove your consumer rights (Section 15).
If you want to use a guide for a team, school, organisation, workplace, client project, course, training programme, public resource, AI system or commercial product, contact us first at hello@whatisgm.com.
7. Prices, currency and payment
Prices are shown on the relevant product page and may change at any time.
We sell to customers internationally. Depending on your location, Shopify Markets settings, currency selector, payment method or browser settings, prices may be shown in your local currency or in Australian dollars. The final price, currency, taxes and charges are shown at checkout before you complete your purchase.
You are responsible for any applicable taxes, duties, currency-conversion fees, bank fees, card fees or charges imposed by your bank, card issuer or payment provider. Where we are required to collect sales tax, GST, VAT or similar on digital products in your country or region, it will be shown at checkout.
We may offer individual guides, free guides, discounted guides, bundles, subscriptions, memberships, passes, corporate or team licences, or other products. Inclusions, access periods, renewal terms and licence limits are shown on the product page or at checkout.
We may refuse, cancel, limit or refund orders where we reasonably suspect fraud, abuse, pricing errors, unauthorised resale, sanctions issues, payment problems, chargeback abuse, watermark removal, unauthorised redistribution or breach of these Terms.
8. Delivery, downloads and access
After purchase, you'll usually receive access by email, customer account, your Shopify order page, a Shopify Digital Downloads link or another digital delivery method. Because our products are digital, access is typically delivered immediately or shortly after your payment is confirmed.
You are responsible for keeping your account details secure and for downloading and storing your files.
A download link may allow more than one download. This does not give you permission to share, publish, resell or distribute the file.
We may apply download limits, time limits, account-based access, watermarks, purchaser identifiers or other access controls where reasonably necessary to protect our content, prevent abuse, maintain security or operate the business.
If you lose access to a purchased guide, contact us and we'll make reasonable efforts to help, subject to fraud checks, licence limits, account verification and technical availability.
We may update guides from time to time, but we do not guarantee that every purchase includes lifetime updates unless the product page clearly says so.
9. Refunds and cancellations
Our guides are digital products delivered instantly, so once you have accessed or downloaded a guide it generally cannot be "returned." Where you have a separate, more detailed Refund Policy, that policy applies and is incorporated into these Terms. If the two ever conflict, the standalone Refund Policy governs.
- Change of mind: Because of the instant-access nature of digital downloads, we generally do not offer change-of-mind refunds once a guide has been accessed or downloaded. We make this clear before you buy.
- If something is wrong: If a product is faulty, fails to download, is not delivered, or is materially not as described, contact us at hello@whatisgm.com and we will make it right — by fixing the issue, re-sending access, or providing a refund where appropriate.
- Your legal rights are unaffected: Nothing here limits any non-excludable refund or remedy you may have under the consumer laws of your country or region (Section 15). Some places give you statutory rights to a remedy for faulty or misdescribed digital products, and in some cases a right to cancel — we honour those rights where they apply.
- Subscriptions: Cancelling a subscription stops future billing but does not automatically refund past charges, unless required by law or stated otherwise (Section 10).
10. Subscriptions, memberships, bundles and passes
Goodmachine may offer bundles, subscriptions, memberships, all-access products, passes, premium reading products or other recurring products. Specific terms are shown on the product page or at checkout.
Unless stated otherwise:
- subscriptions and memberships renew automatically until cancelled;
- you can cancel future renewals through your account or by contacting us;
- cancellation stops future billing but does not automatically refund past charges (subject to Section 9 and your legal rights);
- access may end when the paid period expires;
- access may be limited to the guides, categories, releases or benefits included in the product you bought;
- member-only research, articles, archives or benefits may change over time;
- launch pricing, discounts, introductory offers, bundles or benefits may change or end.
Where required by law in your country or region (for example, certain auto-renewal disclosure and cancellation rules in parts of the US and EU/UK), we will provide the required notices and an easy way to cancel.
11. Reader responses, reviews and submitted content
Goodmachine may allow comments, reader responses, reviews, testimonials, survey responses or other community features.
You are responsible for what you submit. You agree not to submit content that is unlawful, defamatory, harassing, abusive, threatening, hateful, discriminatory, pornographic, exploitative, spammy, misleading, infringing, malicious, private, confidential or otherwise inappropriate.
We may moderate, edit, refuse, remove, disable or decline to publish content at our discretion.
By submitting content, you grant XTRI Pty Ltd a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to use, reproduce, edit, publish, display, distribute and promote that content in connection with Goodmachine. You retain ownership of your content. Do not submit content unless you have the right to do so.
12. Intellectual property
Goodmachine — including its articles, guides, designs, logos, trademarks, copy, layouts, illustrations, templates, downloads and other materials — is owned by or licensed to XTRI Pty Ltd and protected by intellectual property laws around the world.
You may read, link to and share public article URLs in ordinary ways. You may not scrape, copy, reproduce, republish, sell, redistribute or commercially exploit Goodmachine content without permission.
13. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the Service for unlawful, misleading, harmful or abusive purposes;
- interfere with the site, store, servers, security, checkout, payments, downloads or other readers;
- scrape, crawl, harvest or extract content or data at scale without permission;
- bypass paywalls, checkout, download limits, account controls, licence restrictions, watermarks or security measures;
- use bots, scripts or automated tools in a way that burdens or abuses the Service;
- upload malware or harmful code;
- impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation;
- infringe the rights of Goodmachine or others;
- use purchased guides or free downloads for unauthorised AI training, redistribution, resale or public file sharing.
14. Third-party services and links
The Service may link to or integrate with third-party websites, platforms, apps, Shopify services, payment providers, email tools, analytics services, social platforms and embedded media.
We are not responsible for third-party services, content, policies, outages, errors or conduct. Your use of third-party services may be governed by their own terms and privacy policies.
15. Your consumer rights
We sell internationally, and your country or region may give you mandatory consumer rights that cannot be excluded or limited by these Terms. Nothing in these Terms removes, restricts or modifies those rights. Where any part of these Terms conflicts with a consumer right you have by law, that law prevails to the extent of the conflict.
In particular, depending on where you live:
- Australia: Our products come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Where we fail to meet a consumer guarantee, you may be entitled to a remedy.
- United Kingdom & European Union / EEA: You may have statutory rights regarding digital content that is faulty or not as described, and in some cases a right to cancel within a set period — though this cancellation right may not apply, or may be limited, once you start downloading or accessing digital content with your consent. We honour these rights where they apply.
- United States: Your rights may vary by state, including certain rights regarding automatic renewals, refunds and misrepresentation. We comply with applicable state and federal consumer-protection laws.
- Canada and other regions: You may have additional non-excludable consumer protections under local law, which we honour where they apply.
If you're unsure of your rights, contact us at hello@whatisgm.com or your local consumer-protection authority.
16. Availability and changes
We aim to keep the Service useful, fast and available, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may change, suspend or discontinue any part of the site, store, newsletter, account system, guide library, product, feature or service at any time.
17. Disclaimers
To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We do not guarantee that:
- content will be complete, accurate, current or suitable for your circumstances;
- guides will produce a particular outcome;
- the site, store or checkout will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free;
- downloads will remain available forever;
- third-party integrations will continue operating.
This section does not exclude or limit any right or remedy you have under applicable consumer law (Section 15).
18. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, XTRI Pty Ltd and its officers, employees, contractors and agents are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive loss, loss of profit, loss of data, loss of goodwill, business interruption or similar losses arising from your use of the Service.
Where our liability cannot be excluded but can be limited, our liability is limited, at our option, to resupplying the relevant product or service, or paying the cost of that resupply.
Some countries and regions do not allow certain limitations or exclusions of liability, so some of the above may not apply to you. This section does not limit liability that cannot be limited by law (for example, liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence where that cannot be excluded).
19. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify XTRI Pty Ltd against loss, liability, damage, cost or expense arising from your breach of these Terms, misuse of the Service, infringement of rights, unlawful conduct, chargeback abuse, unauthorised redistribution, watermark removal, or content you submit. This indemnity does not apply to the extent the loss is caused by our own breach, negligence or unlawful conduct, or cannot be excluded by law.
20. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, misuse the Service, infringe rights, create a legal or security risk, or engage in conduct we reasonably consider harmful.
Sections relating to intellectual property, licences, payments, disclaimers, liability, indemnity, governing law and dispute resolution survive termination.
21. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of New South Wales, Australia, and you agree to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New South Wales and the Commonwealth courts of Australia.
However, if you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer-protection laws of your country of residence, and you may also be entitled to bring proceedings in your local courts where the law gives you that right. We'd always rather resolve things directly first — please contact us at hello@whatisgm.com and we'll genuinely try to sort it out.
22. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. The updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. If changes are significant, we may take reasonable steps to notify customers, subscribers or account holders.
