A tan is not a wellness practice
Social media has repackaged ultraviolet radiation injury as self-care. The biology did not agree to the rebrand — and the long-latency consequences are accumulating whether the TikTok trend fades or not.

The cultural fact and the biological fact
A video offering "tanning secrets" and displaying a bikini tan line drew more than 11 million views, according to Associated Press reporting. On TikTok, "tanfluencers" track the UV index not to avoid peak radiation but to seek it out — a practice called "UV index tanning" — and then reveal their tan lines and bronzed skin to audiences that skew young and female.
A separate trend, "tanmaxxing," describes the deliberate pursuit of the deepest possible tan, often involving minimal sun protection and extended exposure during peak UV hours. News 5 Cleveland reported that health experts are raising concerns about the trend's reach among teens and young adults.
That is the cultural fact.
The biological fact is simpler and less negotiable: melanin production rises after ultraviolet radiation damages the DNA in skin cells. The colour may be the result someone wants. The cellular injury is not an optional extra. As dermatologist Dr Erika Summers of the University of Utah told University of Utah Health: "All freckling and tanned skin is damaged skin."
What the science says — in detail
The mechanism
Ultraviolet radiation, particularly UVB (280–315 nm) and UVA (315–400 nm), penetrates the epidermis and dermis. UVB directly damages DNA by creating cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and 6-4 photoproducts — molecular lesions that, if unrepaired, can produce mutations in genes that regulate cell growth. UVA penetrates deeper and generates reactive oxygen species that damage DNA, proteins, and lipids indirectly.
Melanin production (melanogenesis) is the skin's protective response. Melanin absorbs and scatters UV radiation, reducing further damage. But the melanin response is triggered by damage that has already occurred. A tan is evidence that the skin has been injured and is attempting to defend itself — not evidence that it is healthier.
The cancer risk
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, classifies UV-emitting tanning devices as Group 1 carcinogens — "carcinogenic to humans." This is the same category as tobacco smoke, asbestos, and ionising radiation. The IARC's 2009 assessment, reaffirmed in subsequent reviews, reported a 75% higher melanoma risk when tanning bed use began before age 30.
A 2022 peer-reviewed epidemiological review published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found a consistent, dose-related association between indoor tanning and all three major skin cancer types:
- Melanoma: the most lethal form, with risk increasing with cumulative sessions and earlier age at first use.
- Basal cell carcinoma: the most common form, with risk particularly elevated for those who began tanning before age 25.
- Squamous cell carcinoma: also dose-related, with risk increasing with total hours of exposure.
Cancer Research UK summarises the consensus position bluntly: "There's no such thing as safe UV tanning."
The ageing effect
Beyond cancer, UV exposure drives photoageing: the breakdown of collagen and elastin fibres that produces wrinkles, sagging, and uneven pigmentation. This is not a cosmetic footnote. It is the same mechanism — cumulative DNA and protein damage — producing different visible outcomes on different timescales. The tan fades in weeks. The collagen loss accumulates over decades.
The "base tan" myth
A persistent claim — that a "base tan" protects against sunburn and therefore reduces risk — is contradicted by the evidence. A base tan provides an SPF equivalent of roughly 2–4, far below the SPF 30+ recommended for meaningful protection. More importantly, the base tan itself represents UV damage. You cannot protect skin by damaging it first.
Why this trend travels
Tanning content sells a fast, visible payoff: glow, definition, attractiveness, a mood lift, perhaps a sense of control over appearance. Long-latency risks — cancer diagnosed at 45 from exposure at 15 — are difficult to feel. The false "base tan protects me" idea exploits that mismatch between immediate reward and delayed consequence.
Social media amplifies the effect. A single viral video can normalise a behaviour for millions of viewers in hours. The algorithm does not distinguish between a dermatologist's warning and a tanfluencer's endorsement — it optimises for engagement, and aspirational before-and-after content engages.
The Washington Post reported on 30 July that dermatologists are increasingly alarmed by the trend, noting that tanfluencers "either haven't gotten the message or seem to be disregarding it." The Los Angeles Times reported earlier in July that teen girls are embracing a renewed obsession with tanning, driven heavily by social media trends — and that the UV index, a public-health tool designed to help people avoid dangerous exposure, is being repurposed as a tanning optimisation tool.
The regulatory dimension
In a development that has alarmed dermatologists, the Los Angeles Times reported that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as US Secretary of Health and Human Services, has cleared a path for minors' use of tanning beds — reversing years of public-health consensus that had restricted access for those under 18 in many jurisdictions.
This is not merely a cultural story. It is a regulatory story. When public-health protections are withdrawn, the burden of risk assessment shifts from institutions to individuals — and individuals, particularly adolescents, are poorly equipped to weigh a 30-year cancer risk against a weekend aesthetic payoff.
Hype deconstruction
Tanning is not newly dangerous because it is on TikTok. It has always carried risk. What is new is the frictionless social distribution of aesthetic advice that can make a risky behaviour appear ordinary, personally endorsed, and consequence-free.
Three claims should be declined:
- "A tan means you're healthy." It means your skin has been injured and is producing melanin in response.
- "A base tan protects you." It provides negligible protection (SPF ~2–4) and represents damage already done.
- "Sunless tanner is dangerous too." DHA-based sunless tanners work by reacting with amino acids in the skin's surface layer. They do not involve UV radiation. The cosmetic result is achievable without the carcinogenic mechanism.
What this means for you
If the goal is colour: Use a sunless tanner (spray, mousse, or lotion containing dihydroxyacetone). It produces a cosmetic tan without UV exposure. It does not protect against sunburn — you still need sunscreen.
If you will be outdoors:
- Seek shade, especially between 10am and 4pm.
- Wear protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+), apply it 15–30 minutes before exposure, and reapply every two hours — more often if swimming or sweating.
- In Australia, make sun protection routine when the UV index is 3 or above. Check the UV index, not the temperature — UV damage occurs even on cool, cloudy days.
Avoid tanning beds entirely. There is no safe dose.
Monitor your skin: Seek medical advice for any mole or spot that is changing, bleeding, itching, or irregular in shape, colour, or border. The ABCDE rule (Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolution) is a useful screening tool, not a substitute for a dermatologist's examination.
For parents: "Cancer in 30 years" can be too abstract for a teenager. Discuss immediate outcomes too: burns, pain, peeling, uneven pigmentation, and premature wrinkling. More importantly, model sun protection yourself. Adolescents notice what adults do more than what adults say.
Uncertainty ledger
- The claimed scale of the social-media tanning resurgence is based on observed content and engagement metrics, not a population-level measure of increased tanning behaviour. We know the content is viral. We do not yet know whether actual tanning bed use or deliberate UV exposure has increased at population scale.
- The health evidence for UV risk is longstanding, robust, and not uncertain. What is uncertain is whether the current social-media trend will produce a measurable increase in skin cancer incidence in 20–30 years.
- The regulatory reversal on minors' tanning bed access is recent. Its public-health impact will take years to measure.
Bottom Line
A tan is not a health marker. It is your skin responding to radiation it is trying to defend against — and the damage accumulates whether you see it now or in 20 years. The beauty trend will pass. The UV exposure history written into your skin cells will not.
